Defence Bank 50 Years – Celebrating Connection at the Grand Hyatt

One of the things I love most about my work is that I’m always learning. This week, I gained a new appreciation for the diversity of banking institutions in Australia. Unlike the big banks, Defence Bank is a member-owned (mutual) organisation that provides financial services to both the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the wider community. With branches on military bases across the country, they understand the unique needs of ADF members—whether it’s being out of internet range or suddenly receiving orders to leave the country for an undefined period of time.

I was honoured to MC the 2025 Defence Bank Conference and 50-Year Gala Celebration, with the theme of connection. It was the perfect focus, given this was the very first time staff from all 26 branches came together face-to-face.

The Grand Hyatt Melbourne provided a spectacular backdrop for the event, with meticulous planning delivered by Kristen, Rachel Collett, and Crystal from Defence Bank, working alongside the creative talents of Aryanna, Carol Rothschild, and Nadia Kentera from KE Creative. Together, they crafted a seamless experience that moved from a full day of conference learning into an unforgettable evening gala.

The highlights were plentiful:

  • CEO Roberto Scenna’s keynote, a brilliant 10-step speech that set the tone for the day

  • 🎶 The 10-piece Australian Navy Band, filling the ballroom with energy and pride

  • 🍸 A custom-designed upper lounge and late-night spirits bar that added an extra touch of sophistication

  • 📸 A themed photo booth, keeping the smiles flowing well into the night

  • 🎨 A stunning hand-painted 50th Anniversary canvas by Rob Scholton, created live during the conference and dramatically revealed at the gala

The result was an event brimming with connection, energy, and pride. A true celebration of 50 years of service, and a reminder that with Defence Bank, our ADF community is in very good hands.

For me personally, it was a privilege to be trusted with hosting such a milestone moment. My role was to weave humour, warmth, and energy into the day while ensuring the spotlight stayed firmly on the incredible people of Defence Bank. Watching the staff connect, celebrate, and share their pride in the organisation was the real highlight for me. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love what I do.
